There will be no preliminary planning or drawing; the process will dictate direction. Students will use mark-making tools, watercolor, and gouache to implement elements and principles of design. Instruction will begin with random marks, followed by watercolor, and finally, gouache to finish the painting. While the finished work may be representational, the primary goal is a compositionally pleasing piece that aligns with the artist's personal aesthetic.

Stan Kurth

Artist and workshop instructor Stan Kurth has drawn and painted for most of his life. An aunt, an artist and art instructor herself, became a significant influence even before he started school. He received a bachelor's degree from Northern Arizona University in 1971. Stan lives with the conviction of “fear not,” and that same attitude permeates not just his life but also his art. His focus and dedication to his work have earned him signature member status in several watercolor societies, including the National Watercolor Society - Master, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies - Master, San Diego Watercolor Society, Arizona Watercolor Association, and Contemporary Watercolorists of Arizona. He currently lives in Peoria, Arizona. “I think everyone is an artist when they’re young. You learn to walk, you learn to talk, you learn to draw. It stuck with me. My aunt gave me a small canvas and some oil paints when I was four years old, and I painted my first oil painting in her studio. I’ve been painting and drawing ever since."

You'll love Stanley's workshop! I took one from him in Phoenix and he is a great teacher and his workshop was great!

I had Stan come to Portland in 2018 and teach a workshop here---which is how I came to recommend him to our Watercolor Society of Oregon as a juror/workshop instructor. He is a very intuitive painter and encourages a bit of experimentation. We are excited to be hosting him next April!!
